How Many Healthy Years Can You Expect in Your Life?
Whether extra years of life gained through increased longevity are spent in good or bad health is a crucial question.
In 2015, the number of healthy life years at birth was estimated at 63.3 years for women and 62.6 years for men in the EU; this represented approximately 76 % and 80 % of total life expectancy for women and men.
Life expectancy for women in the EU was, on average, 5.4 years longer than that for men in 2015. However, most of these additional years tend to be lived with activity limitations. Men therefore tend to spend a greater proportion of their somewhat shorter lives free from activity limitations.
